Reversing a 92-year tradition of essentially shutting down its theater operations for the summer, the Cleveland Play House will present two touring shows this June and July, the historic theater’s first hot-weather programming.

Starting Thursday, June 12, and running through Sunday, July 20, “Girls Night: The Musical” will play the Bolton Theatre while “Late Nite Catechism 2″ will take over the Studio One Theatre. Both are non-Actors’ Equity Association tours produced by the New York-based Entertainment Events Inc.

Play House managing director Kevin Moore said the Summer Fun Series was prompted by the absence this summer of locally produced musical theater by Lyric Opera Cleveland, which merged with Cleveland Opera to form Opera Cleveland. (The combined company offered those productions last summer, but they were cut for its second season.)

“We have this building, with five theaters, and we need to generate revenue and to get people in the door,” Moore said.
